If MMK is a Kdrama . . .

Sa dramaverse ako nagapahurom most days... kag sa akon pagpahurom-hurom, nasalapu-an ko ang Move to Heaven, a Netflix original series. Ang series nga dya has none of the overused tropes of a typical kdrama; like romantic fantasies, love triangles, childhood connection and pretty men with shiny red lips. In fact, the series feels more like MMK, kulang na lang si Dear Charo. Maalaala Mo Kaya or MMK for short, is the longest running drama anthology show to date in Philippine TV since its premier in 1991. The program features weekly real-life stories or anecdotes of common people or even famous celebrities and personalities through letter sending. Basta MMK gani, expected dun nga matangso ang sip-on mo ukon magpin-ot ang dughan sa pugong kang luha sa kabuhi nga anda feature of the week.

Kun ang MMK features the lives and loves of people from all walks of life with special focus on death and moving on, ang MTH explores the difficulty of those who were left behind. Baw sampat gid ang storyline sa mga pareho ko who are still struggling with grief and the aftermath of being left behind...

The series follows the story of "trauma cleaners" Geu-ru (played by Tang Joon-sang, ang youngest NorKor soldier ka CLOY) and his uncle Sang-Gu (Lee Je-hoon of My Paparotti, Signal, Taxi Driver). Ang obra nanda is to clean up the place of those who passed away and respectfully disposing of their possessions while keeping the things that they deem the “heart” of the deceased in a yellow box to pass to their loved ones. Along the way, nephew and uncle get a chance to clean up the mess and trauma in their own lives. Move To Heaven is based on the nonfiction essay, Things Left Behind by Kim Sae Byul, a first-generation trauma cleaner.

Kun nauyunan mo mag emote emote because you needed the waterworks for psychological cleansing, this is the series for you. It has everything an MMK aficionado loves: emotional stories, forgiveness and reconciliation. Other themes explored are autism, dementia, euthanasia, suicide, domestic violence, neglectful children and relationships frowned upon by society. Bisan bug-at ang iban nga themes pay heart-warming ang series nga dya. Tanan man kita maka relate on how it is to continue living while coping with the loss of loved ones.

Move to Heaven is a poignant reminder that no one really knows just how to survive after another’s last breath. In the ruin of what was left, all we can do is put together pieces of memories we’d never really bothered to safe keep and precisely remember. - Dorynna Untivero
