ICYMI: Warm Bodies (2013)

Updated: Oct 30, 2021

In case you missed it, Warm Bodies is a zombie-themed romcom. Huod, waay nagsala ang basa mo, zom-rom-com or rom-zom-com is a thing. Gani tulad nga Halloween kun gusto mo maglantaw ka “scary movie” (but not too horrific hay talawit ikaw) nga may samo nga romance (because you're such a romantic like me), basi ang movie ang dya ang angay kanimo.

Nicholas Hoult as "R"

The film stars Nicholas Hoult, as the cutie undead guy who falls in love with the lovely human Julie (Teresa Palmer), daughter of zombiephobe survivalist warlord Grigio (John Malkovich) in a post-apocalyptic world where human survivors have barricaded themselves into a safe area of the city. There are three distinct species populating the Earth post-worldwide infection nightmare: Humans (who are armed and WILL shoot any corpse that comes within growling distance of their walled city.); Zombies (wandering the streets, always on the alert for the next human meal. Maybe hopelessly lost. Maybe not.) and "The Bonies." (zombies that have given up all hope and have resorted to tearing off their own flesh, leaving behind skeletal killing creatures that would just as soon take down a zombie as a human.)

Sa tanan nga mga teen paranormal romances such as vampires (of Twilight), werewolves, ghosts.. ang mga zombie lang so far ang "undate-able" (ikaw man bi, would you go out on a dinner date with a rotting corpse nga imo nasandadan pagdu-aw mo sa patyo tulad nga Undas?)... until we meet "R" that is. Suddenly, zombies could be "hot"... he may be dead but his heart is warm! This post-apocalyptic love story with a terrific sense of humor is actually another retelling of Shakespeare's star-crossed lovers Romeo & Juliet, kag may balcony scene pa tanda.

“What am I doing with my life? … Why can’t I connect with people? Oh, right, ‘cause I’m dead.” - R

Amo dya ang opening line ni R that got me hooked... Here is a zombie (looking like an emo boy-band heartthrob) with an existential concern that there might be more to life than moaning and eating people's cerebrum. The film is based on Isaac Marion's short story-turned-novel originally entitled "I am a Zombie Filled with Love."

The implied cause of the zombie apocalypse in this rom-zom-com is our collective addiction to technology — which all feels worryingly plausible.. kapin pa gid tulad nga may actual pandemic kag tanan dlang online.

Ang nauyunan ko sa anda zombie-meets-girl story is how surprisingly universal the tale is about the difficulty of communicating your feelings when it really matters. It's unabashedly romantic and unapologetically optimistic for a dystopian movie about the undead. Maka relate gid ako kay R, that every time I get to meet new people, I also tell myself "Don't be creepy. Don't be creepy."

hadlokan ikaw maukoban ni R? huod gid lang eh... zombie tana mo, ang ukob na basi madaranan kag pati utok mo pasayon na. It's meant to be corny siguro hay more on the "rom" rather than "zom" ang film.
