Comfort Movies

Updated: Nov 30, 2021

Amo dya sanda ang mga ginasulit sulit lantaw kapin pa kun kinanlan ta "comfort" ukon waay lang kita ralantawon nga iban hay naubos ta run binge ang sa "to watch list" naton, Gingging. Comfort movies are there to help in our reality blues, especially if we need some form of "sanity break" from the hustle of living. Ukon gusto mo lang gid mag unwind hay raku timo free time.

Comfort movies may come in different types, depende sa nauyonan mo. Kag depende pa gid sa imo mood. They could be nostalgic, guilty pleasure and feel good films. Here's my list of movies I find a temporary solace and warmth when the outside world feels too surreal for me.

Nostalgic Movies

Amo dya sanda ang mga movies of "childhood"... May attachment kita sa mga films nga dya hay nalantawan ta dya at the "formative part" of our lives -- as children, or while forming our identity in our teens or reinventing our identities in early adulthood. Nostalgic films evoke warm cozy feelings and bring us back to the time when life is much simpler. They also remind us of the people we share them with, making us feel right at home.

Indi masukob ang amon utoy-utoy sa The Gods Must be Crazy. Unforgettable man ang Got to Believe in Magic kag King and Queen of Hearts sa prom scene kang Zapped! Amo ra guro nga suki sa baylehan ang kanta ni David Pomeranz. And Labyrinth is still amazeballs.

Guilty Pleasure

These are fun movies that promise a good time. Syempre depende man dya angud sa imo personal definition of what "fun" and "good time" is. My guilty pleasure will always be animated films, "mindless" rom-coms and old films. Oh and horror movies, the paranormal kind.

*Plus "ecchi" films on the side

Indi ko run maisip kun kapira ko ginasulit dya sanda... basta sanda ka dya akon go-to-movies when I want to de-stress and keep myself from overthinking. There is just something endearing about Strange Magic. Nasadyahan gid ko sa mga pop songs nanda, daw theme song ka mga bitter nga laon. Si Megamind ang all-time fave reluctant hero ko, who is not used to positive reinforcements. He could even be considered as a Byronic hero, but let's not go into that. An Affair to Remember with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr is one of the most romantic films of all time. Daw inang-inang dya ka mga rom-coms. Walang kupas ang kilig bisan kang 1957 pa ang film. Nami lantawon sa mga gab-i nga mauran.

Feel Good

Inspirational movies. Amo dya sanda ang ralantawon ta kun gusto ta magpati nga there is a lot of good left in the world...when we want to restore our faith in humanity.. or just simply to feel good because they re-energizes us. Ah life is beautiful, after all.

Sa sinehan ko dya una nalantaw ang Ever After, imaw kami ka miga ko nga paralantaw man halin pa kang high school kami. Indi ko gid malipatan ang scene nga gin-aba ni Danielle (Drew Barrymore) si Prince Henry (Dougray Scott) kang ginhambalan tana ka mga gypsies nga she can take "anything that she can carry". It was an empowering moment for someone like me at that time, who was and still is lampa sa sports. Para ka nakon, Ever After is the best retelling of the Cinderella story.

LOTR trilogy is one of the most popular feel good films of all time. Ano pa mahambal ta, it got everything! (except representations of POC or people of color and more women roles). Pay pareho sa kadam-an who are drawn to the LOTR, I also got inspired by the speeches especially ang kay Samwise Gamgee to Frodo Baggins. Ang next favorite speech ko is the one delivered by Bill Pullman in 1996's Independence Day movie (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9t1IK_9apWs)

Big Fish is another all time favorite. Magic realism! Or Tim Burton's brand of storytelling. Ang manami sa story is that it is deceptively simple, yet can work on so many levels. I watched for the fantasy but stayed for the feels... and got Ewan McGregor as bonus.

Te ano imo comfort movies?

In the words of Moises & Sergio Velasquez from Screened (where this post is inspired):

Comfort movies are there to catch our breath, to remind us of something important we might have forgotten and to ground us in something familiar so we can keep moving on.
